#Insiders4Good East Africa Fellowship
Program Terms

Applicant Eligibility

Residents of East Africa – Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda – who meet the following eligibility requirements may submit an application to participate in the #Insiders4Good Fellowship program (the “Fellowship”). Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a registered member of the Windows Insider Program;
  • Be a legal resident of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania or Uganda, and age 18 or over;
  • Originate an idea for a product or service that will improve the lives of East African people;
  • Complete the #Insiders4Good Fellowship Application and be willing to provide additional information and personal references upon request by Microsoft and partners in support of your application;
  • Be willing to adhere to the Fellowship Requirements[link], should you be awarded a Fellowship;
  • GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES: Microsoft is committed to complying with government gift and ethics rules, and therefore, government employees are not eligible;
  • NOT be an employee of Microsoft Corporation, or an employee of a Microsoft subsidiary;
  • NOT be an immediate family member (parent, sibling, spouse/domestic partners, child) or household member of a Microsoft employee or an employee of a Microsoft subsidiary, or any person involved in any part of the administration and execution of this promotion.

PLEASE NOTE: It is your sole responsibility to comply with your employer’s gift policies. If your participation violates your employer’s policies, you may be disqualified. Microsoft disclaims any and all liability and will not be party to any disputes or actions related to this matter.

What are the application starting and end dates?

We will accept applications starting at 12:01 a.m. East Africa Time (EAT) on February 2, 2017, with final applications due by 23:59 p.m. EAT on March 31, 2017.

How to Apply

Complete the online initial application by the deadline of March 31, 2017 at 23:59 EAT.

Applicants are urged to submit their applications well in advance of the deadline to leave enough time to address any potential technical registration problems or respond to any questions about the application. Each application must:

  • Be submitted via the online form prior to the deadline. Applicants will receive an email to confirm that their application was successfully received;
  • Follow the directions and include complete responses to all required questions;
  • Be accurate and truthful in all respects;
  • Provide all responses in English;
  • Include only content that the applicant has permission to use.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not responsible for entries that we do not receive for any reason, or for entries that we receive but are not decipherable for any reason. We will automatically disqualify any incomplete or illegible entry.Any costs associated with preparing the application shall be the responsibility of the applicant, regardless of the conduct or outcome of the Fellowship process.

Acceptance into the Program will be at Microsoft’s sole discretion.

What constitutes an eligible application?

To be eligible, all applications must meet the following content / technical requirements:

  • Your product or service must be your own original work and/or used under an appropriate license;
  • Your product or service cannot have been selected as a winner in any contest or sweepstakes;
  • You must have obtained all consents, approvals, or licenses required for you to submit your product or service with your application;
  • Your application and product or service may not include any third-party trademarks (logos, names) or copyrighted materials (music, images, video, recognizable people) unless you have obtained permission to use the materials for this purpose.

Your application and product or service may NOT contain, as determined by us, in our sole and absolute discretion, any content that:

  • Is sexually explicit, unnecessarily violent, or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional, or age group;
  • Is profane or pornographic;
  • Promotes alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms/weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing) or a political agenda;
  • Is obscene or offensive;
  • Defames, misrepresents, or contains disparaging remarks about other people or companies;
  • Communicates messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or good will with which we wish to associate;
  • Violates any law.

We reserve the right to reject any application, in our sole and absolute discretion, that we determine does not meet the above criteria.

PLEASE NOTE: By applying for this Fellowship, you agree to allow Microsoft to post your product or service to that website, whether you are selected as a Fellow or not. We are not responsible for any unauthorized use of your product or service by visitors to this website. While we reserve these rights, we are not obligated to use your product or service for any purpose, even if it has been selected as a winning entry. Please see Fellowship Requirements for full information about where your application information may be published. If you do not want to grant us these rights to your entry, please do not enter this Fellowship.

Criteria for Fellowship selection

A panel of Microsoft-selected local and global experts will select up to 25 #Insiders4Good Fellows based on the following criteria:

  • Social Impact: Your product or service addresses a concrete issue affecting a clearly identified segment of the East African population and provides a clear benefit to the customers upon purchase and use of the product or service.
  • Market Viability: The product or service has a clearly defined market and can be priced in such a way that it can become viable and sustainable as a business, given the local context.
  • Innovation: The product or service provides a unique approach to the issues faced by the local market through a never-before seen idea or concept; an improvement on existing solutions; or a unique combination of multiple solutions for more effective and efficient execution.
  • Scalability: The business has the potential to serve customers across the geographic region where the entrepreneur is based, or across all East Africa.

If you are confirmed as a Fellow:

  • You may not exchange your Fellowship benefit for cash or any other merchandise or services. However, if for any reason a listed benefit is unavailable, we reserve the right to substitute a product of equal or greater value; and
  • You may not designate someone else as a Fellowship awardee. If you are unable or unwilling to accept the Fellowship, we will award it to an alternate potential Fellow; and
  • If you accept the Fellowship, you will be solely responsible for all applicable federal, state, and local taxes related to accepting the award; and
  • If you are otherwise eligible for this Fellowship, but are considered a minor in your place of residence, we may award the benefits to your parent/legal guardian on your behalf; and
  • Unless otherwise noted, all products and services provided to Fellows under this program are subject to their respective manufacturer’s warranties and / or terms and conditions.

Fellowship Requirements

If selected, #Insiders4Good Fellows agree to:

  1. Commit to attending a week-long fellowship bootcamp on June 12, 2017 [Location to be confirmed] in Nairobi, Kenya and commit to a 6 month mentorship program, which will require biweekly virtual mentorship sessions beginning June 5 – December 5, 2017. Travel expenses will be covered by the Windows Insider Program.
  2. Commit to mentoring an earlier stage East African entrepreneur and sharing updates with the Windows Insider Team until December 5, 2018.
  3. Disclose Affiliation and Compensation. Fully disclose in every social media post, blog post, article, interview, and any other communication made as part of this Program, your affiliation with Microsoft and any compensation or incentive you have received or anticipate receiving. All disclosures must be made in a clear and readily visible way. For examples, see below:
    1. My friends at Microsoft invited me to [insert name of event]
    2. Microsoft provided me with [insert description]
    3. Microsoft sponsored this article
    4. This is a Microsoft-sponsored post
    5. For micro-blogs and status updates that have character restrictions, include a hashtag notation such as #sponsored or #paid or #ad
  4. Honesty and Accuracy. Only make statements about the Fellowship, Windows Insider Program, or Microsoft products and services that reflect your honest beliefs, opinions, or experiences, and that you have a reasonable basis to believe are accurate. You agree to familiarize yourself with Microsoft products and services about which you make such statements and periodically to re-familiarize yourself with Microsoft products and services as updates are made to them so that you understand how they work.
  5. Give Notice of Changed Opinion. You will let us know if the opinions expressed in your communications about the Fellowship, Windows Insider Program, or Microsoft products and services have changed after those opinions were published.
  6. Monitoring. You agree that Microsoft or its representatives have the right to monitor your public communications made as part of this Fellowship to verify your compliance with your disclosure and other obligations. You agree that Microsoft or its representatives may provide input to you regarding inaccuracies about the Fellowship, Windows Insider Program, Microsoft products and services, missing disclosures, or any other failures to comply with the above requirements, and you will work with Microsoft to correct such issues promptly.

What other conditions are you agreeing to by applying for this Fellowship?

By submitting your application, you agree:

  • To abide by these Program terms; and
  • To release and hold harmless Microsoft, and its respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, employees and agents from any and all liability or any injury, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with this Fellowship or any benefits provided; and
  • That Microsoft’s decisions will be final and binding on all matters related to this Fellowship; and
  • That by accepting the Fellowship award, Microsoft may use your proper name and country of residence online and in print, or in any other media, in connection with this Fellowship, without payment or compensation to you, except where prohibited by law.
  • You will retain full ownership of your application (including product or service). However, as a part of the Fellowship, your product or service and related content will be featured in connection with the promotion of the Fellowship and the Windows Insider Program in all media worldwide (now known or later developed).
  • You hereby grant Microsoft the right to store your application for the purposes of the Fellowship program.

You acknowledge that Microsoft will collect, process, and use the personal data and information provided by you in connection with and for the purpose of administering and promoting the Fellowship program. Your information also may be shared with judges and third party providers for the purposes of administering and promoting the Fellowship. Some information will be published on the Fellowship program web site and in other media, including in Fellowship marketing and promotion materials.

You agree to sign any necessary documentation that may be required by Microsoft or its designees to make use of the rights granted in these Fellowship terms. You also understand and acknowledge that other applicants may develop materials similar or identical to yours, and you waive any and all claims you may have resulting from any similarities to your application. Nothing in these Fellowship terms shall be construed as granting you any right or license under any intellectual property right of Microsoft (including any rights Microsoft may have in any patents, copyrights, trademarks, service marks, or any trade secrets) or in the Fellowship program web site or any Microsoft web site.

Terminating Participation

Microsoft, at its sole discretion, may terminate a Fellow’s participation at any time with reasonable notice, in the event that Microsoft determines the Fellow is not meeting the Fellowship requirements.

Fellows may terminate their participation at any time by providing written notice to the program owner at wifellow@microsoft.com.

Within 30 days of notice of termination, either by Microsoft or the Fellow, the Fellow must return all hardware and software provided by Microsoft.
